Wasco, Illinois

Wasco is an unincorporated suburb of Chicago in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It has a post office (60183),[2] a few restaurants, and an elementary school sharing its namesake "Wasco Elementary School".[3] Wasco is located along Illinois Route 64 approximately 4 miles west of St. Charles and is partly contained within the village of Campton Hills. The area outside the downtown section is mostly residential homes, spanning several blocks. Although it has a large population (estimated to be over 5,000), Wasco has never been incorporated as its own entity. Only two other Chicago suburbs are like this. Medinah and La Grange Highlands, both have populations well over 1,000, and have still remained unincorporated.

Wasco was originally named Campton, after an early family that settled the area.[4] The Wasco Post Office was originally built in 1836 by a lay preacher named Dr. King on King's Mill Road near Lake Campton. The post office was then moved to its present location on Illinois Route 64 in 1890. Throughout the years, the building has undergone multiple renovations and has served many different functions, including a milk depot, a general store, an antique store, and a repair shop. Other historic buildings in Wasco include the Campton Town Hall built in 1873, the Wasco Baptist Church built in 1891, and Wasco Elementary built in 1906 [5]

Wellington, Illinois

Wellington is located in southeastern Iroquois County at 40°32′29″N 87°40′51″W / 40.54139°N 87.68083°W / 40.54139; -87.68083 (40.541261, -87.680772).[4]Illinois Route 1 passes less than a mile west of the village, leading north 18 miles (29 km) to Watseka, the county seat, and south 5 miles (8 km) to Hoopeston.

As of the census[7] of 2000, there were 264 people, 111 households, and 82 families residing in the village. The population density was 954.0 people per square mile (364.0/km²). There were 118 housing units at an average density of 426.4 per square mile (162.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.62% White and 0.38% Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.89% of the population.

There were 111 households out of which 25.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.2% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.1% were non-families. 22.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.72.

Wheeler, Illinois

Wheeler is located in western Jasper County at 39°2′38″N 88°19′2″W / 39.04389°N 88.31722°W / 39.04389; -88.31722 (39.043804, -88.317342).[4]Illinois Route 33 passes through the north side of the village, leading southeast 9 miles (14 km) to Newton, the county seat, and northwest 14 miles (23 km) to Effingham.

As of the census[7] of 2000, there were 119 people, 41 households, and 30 families residing in the village. The population density was 206.5 people per square mile (79.2/km²). There were 48 housing units at an average density of 83.3 per square mile (32.0/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.16% White, 0.84% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.36% of the population.

There were 41 households out of which 41.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 19.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% were non-families. 22.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.43.

Winnebago County, Illinois

Winnebago County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. According to the 2010 census, it had a population of 295,266,[1] making it the seventh most populous county in Illinois behind Cook County and its five surrounding collar counties. Its county seat is Rockford.[2]

Winnebago County was formed on January 16, 1836 out of Jo Daviess and LaSalle counties. It was named for the Winnebago Tribe of American Indians. At the time the county was founded its inhabitants consisted almost entirely of New Englanders and New England transplants from upstate New York.[3] These were "Yankee" settlers, meaning they were descended from the English Puritans who settled New England during the early 1600s. They made up virtually all of Winnebago County's inhabitants during the first several decades of its history. In this regard the county was similar to most of the northern portion of the state of Illinois, and almost all of the neighboring state of Wisconsin. After the conclusion of the Black Hawk War there was an additional surge of immigration from New England. As a result of this heritage the inhabitants of Winnebago County considered themselves, and functioned as, a cultural expansion of early New England culture.[4] In the Presidential election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln won 3,985 votes in Winnebago County, whereas Steven Douglas only won 817 votes.[5]

In recent years, average temperatures in the county seat of Rockford have ranged from a low of 11 °F (−12 °C) in January to a high of 83 °F (28 °C) in July, although a record low of −27 °F (−33 °C) was recorded in January 1982 and a record high of 112 °F (44 °C) was recorded in July 1936. Average monthly precipitation ranged from 1.34 inches (34 mm) in February to 4.80 inches (122 mm) in June.[7]

Worden, Illinois

Worden was originally called New Hampton, and under the latter name was laid out in 1860. When the railroad was built through the settlement in 1870, the name Worden was given to the station, after John C. Worden, an English immigrant, businessman, and railroad promoter.[4]

According to the 2010 census, Worden has a total area of 0.722 square miles (1.87 km2), of which 0.71 square miles (1.84 km2) (or 98.34%) is land and 0.012 square miles (0.03 km2) (or 1.66%) is water.[6]

As of the census[8] of 2000, there were 905 people, 378 households, and 261 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,370.3 people per square mile (529.4/km²). There were 396 housing units at an average density of 599.6 per square mile (231.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.34% White, 0.44% Native American, 0.11% from other races, and 0.11% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.22% of the population.

Washburn, Illinois

Washburn is a village mostly in Woodford County, with a small northerly portion in Marshall County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,158 at the 2010 census, up from 1,147 in 2000. It is part of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

As of the census[6] of 2000, there were 1,147 people, 436 households, and 309 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,576.6 people per square mile (606.7/km²). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 654.3 per square mile (251.8/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.38% White, 0.17% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.35% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.70% of the population.

There were 436 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.8% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.16.

Wenona, Illinois

The Marshall County portion of Wenona is part of the Peoria Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the small portion that lies in LaSalle County is part of the Ottawa–Streator Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Wenona is located at 41°3′11″N 89°3′12″W / 41.05306°N 89.05333°W / 41.05306; -89.05333 (41.053080, -89.053415).[4] Most of the city lies in Marshall County, although a small portion extends into southern LaSalle County. In the 2000 census, all of Wenona's 1,065 residents lived in Marshall County. According to the 2010 census, Wenona has a total area of 0.74 square miles (1.92 km2), all land.[5]

As of the census[8] of 2000, there were 1,065 people, 453 households, and 278 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,583.9 people per square mile (613.7/km²). There were 504 housing units at an average density of 749.6 per square mile (290.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.65% White, 0.38% Black or African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.19% Asian, and 1.31% from two or more races. 1.50% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Wheeling, Illinois

Wheeling is a village in Cook and Lake counties in the U.S. state of Illinois. A suburb of Chicago, it is primarily in Cook County, approximately 23 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The population was 37,648 at the 2010 census.[3] Wheeling is named for Wheeling, WV.[4]

According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 8.74 square miles (22.6 km2), of which 8.74 square miles (22.6 km2) (or 97.26%) is land and 0.24 square miles (0.62 km2) (or 2.74%) is water.[6]

As of the census[8] of 2010, there were 34,496 people, 13,280 households, and 8,459 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,106.5 people per square mile (1,585.6/km²). There were 13,697 housing units at an average density of 1,630.5 per square mile (629.6/km²). The racial make-up of the village was 76.68% White, 2.44% African American, 0.23% Native American, 9.26% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 9.18% from other races, and 2.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.68% of the population.

Winnetka, Illinois

Winnetka (/wɪˈnɛtkə/) is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States, located 16 miles north of downtown Chicago. The population was 12,187 at the 2010 census. The village is one of the wealthiest places in the nation in terms of household income, and the richest in Illinois.[4]

Winnetka is located at 42°6′22″N 87°44′16″W / 42.10611°N 87.73778°W / 42.10611; -87.73778 (42.106227, −87.73801).[5] Winnetka is located 650 feet (200 m) above sea level and has a magnetic declination of 3° 10' W. According to the 2010 census, Winnetka has a total area of 3.893 square miles (10.08 km2), of which 3.81 square miles (9.87 km2) (or 97.87%) is land and 0.083 square miles (0.21 km2) (or 2.13%) is water.[6]

As of the census[8] of 2010, there were 12,187 people, 4,102 households, and 3,328 families residing in the village. The racial makeup of the village was 94.8% White, 0.3% African American, 0.1% Native American, 3.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.

Worth, Illinois

According to the 2010 census, Worth has a total area of 2.383 square miles (6.17 km2), of which 2.37 square miles (6.14 km2) (or 99.45%) is land and 0.013 square miles (0.03 km2) (or 0.55%) is water.[5]

As of the 2010 census,[7] there were 10,789 people, 4,304 households, 2,726 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,634.4 people per square mile (1,792.1/km²). There were 4,557 housing units [8] at an average density of 1,893.3 per square mile (732.1/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 92.43% White, 1.59% African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.18% from other races, and 2.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.06% of the population.

There were 4,304 households out of which 29.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% were married couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.15.
