MS-13

Mara Salvatrucha (MS), also known as MS-13 (the 13 representing their Sureño affiliation), is an international criminal gang that originated in Los Angeles, California, in the 1980s. The gang later spread to many parts of the continental United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central America, and is active in urban and suburban areas. Most members are of Central American origin, principally El Salvador.

Members of MS are characterized by tattoos covering the body, including the face, and by the use of their own sign language. They are notorious for their violence and a subcultural moral code based on merciless retribution. This cruelty of the distinguished members of the "Maras" or "Mareros" earned them a path to be recruited by the Sinaloa Cartel battling against Los Zetas in an ongoing drug war in Mexico.[5][6][7] Their wide-ranging activities have drawn the attention of the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who have initiated wide-scale raids against known and suspected gang members, arresting hundreds across the United States.[8]

There is some dispute about the etymology of the name. Some sources state the gang is named for La Mara, a street gang in San Salvador, and the Salvatrucha guerrillas who fought in the Salvadoran Civil War.[9] Additionally, the word mara means gang in Caliche slang and is taken from marabunta, the name of a fierce type of ant. "Salvatrucha" may be a combination of the words Salvadoran and trucha, a Caliche word for being alert. The term "Salvatruchas" has been explained as a reference to Salvadorian peasants trained to become guerrilla fighters, referred to as "Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front."[10]

Walnut Grove, Mississippi

Walnut Grove is a town in Leake County, Mississippi. The population was 1,911 at the 2010 census. Under the leadership of eight-term mayor, William Grady Smith, one of the longest-serving mayors in the state, the town had dramatically increased its population and revenues by annexing the Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility, privately owned and operated under contract to the state. By 2011 this was the largest juvenile facility in the nation.[citation needed] The troubled facility was closed in 2016.[2]

Walnut Grove began as a European-American settlement in a nearby location, now referred to as "Old Walnut Grove". This area was developed as cotton plantations in the antebellum era. The town was incorporated in 1884.[3] A post office was established in 1854,[4] and in the early 1900s, electricity and street lights were installed.[3]

The town was surveyed at its present location in 1923. Two canals were built near Walnut Grove in the late 1920s to improve transportation. Walnut Grove received a telephone franchise in 1927, and was connected to the Forest exchange.

Winona, Mississippi

Winona is a city in Montgomery County, Mississippi. The population was 5,482 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County.[4] Winona is known in the local area as "The Crossroads of North Mississippi" due to its central location at the intersection of U.S. Interstate 55 and U.S. Highways 51 and 82.

Middleton, Mississippi was a town that developed in the 19th century two miles west of Winona's site. Some locals consider it the predecessor to Winona. After the railroad was built to the east, development shifted to what became Winona and bypassed Middleton.

The first European-American settler in the area, which was originally part of Carroll County, was Colonel O.J. Moore, who arrived from Virginia in 1848. He agreed to the railroad being constructed through his property, and a station was built in 1860 near his plantation home. As a result of the railroad line and station being built here rather than Middleton, Winona was founded and began to grow. The railroad attracted business, which developed around the station as Moore sold off some property. Winona was incorporated as a town on May 2, 1861. Settlers were attracted because of the railroad access and Winona became a busy trading town.

Tillatoba, Mississippi

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 121 people, 49 households, and 32 families residing in the town. The population density was 119.2 people per square mile (45.8/km²). There were 54 housing units at an average density of 53.2/sq mi (20.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 78.51% White, and 21.49% African American.

There were 49 households out of which 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the town, the population was spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 108.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.7 males.

Walthall County, Mississippi

Walthall County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 15,443.[1] Its county seat is Tylertown.[2] The county is named after Civil War general and Mississippi Senator Edward C. Walthall.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 404 square miles (1,050 km2), of which 404 square miles (1,050 km2) is land and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2) (0.1%) is water.[3] It is the second-smallest county in Mississippi by area.

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 15,443 people residing in the county. 53.4% were White, 44.5% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% of some other race and 1.1% of two or more races. 1.5% were Hispanic or Latino (of any race).

Winstonville, Mississippi

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 319 people, 116 households, and 77 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,097.1 people per square mile (424.7/km²). There were 120 housing units at an average density of 412.7 per square mile (159.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 1.88% White, 97.81% African American, 0.31% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.31% of the population.

There were 116 households out of which 26.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 28.4% were married couples living together, 27.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% were non-families. 31.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.32.

In the town, the population was spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 12.2% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.2 males.

Orla Tinsley

Orla Tinsley began writing for The Irish Times on the state of cystic fibrosis care in Ireland in 2005 when she was 18. Her work launched a decade long campaign to improve healthcare services and awareness of cystic fibrosis in Ireland. The campaign spanned several years and became a nationwide community effort sustained by Tinsley’s articles in The Irish Times about lack of facilities, the deaths of her friends and the stories and energy of people with CF and their families and communities around Ireland.[2]

In September 2008 for her work she was named Rehab Young Person of the Year[3] In April 2009 she appeared on Late Late Show after writing several pieces in The Irish Times holding government to account on broken promises to build an adult cystic fibrosis unit in Dublin.[4] In 2009 she began an internship in The Irish Times. That same year the promised government funding for the cystic fibrosis unit was pulled and the campaign reprised. Several campaigners from the previous had died. Ms Tinsley and other new campaigners featured on RTE Liveline Show which played an important role in the campaign. Tinsley was named Irish Tatler Magazine's Woman of the Year [5] in 2009. In 2010 she was awarded the Young Medical Journalist of the Year award.

An Adult Cystic Fibrosis practice was set up at St. Vincent's Hospital in the late 1970s by Professor MX Fitzgerald. CF was one of the first conditions to be treated by a multidisciplinary team comprising doctors, dietitians, physiotherapists, psychologists and nurse specialists. Huge improvements in life expectancy were achieved in this period but when advances in microbial genetics revealed how highly-resistant and life-threatening bacteria could spread through the CF patient population, it became clear that a dedicated space was required to treat CF patients in isolation from one another. There was no dedicated CF ward at this time and it took years to convince those in power to build one. In July 2012, after campaign work over numerous years, a dedicated Cystic Fibrosis Unit opened.[8] The ward block has an outpatient and inpatient facility for people with cystic fibrosis.[8] It also has a floor of isolation rooms for people with cancer and another floor for those with infectious diseases who need isolation.[8]
